New Outlook for Windows PST File Support – What You Need to Know

Microsoft is introducing significant improvements to PST file support in the new Outlook for Windows. These enhancements will allow users to group emails as conversations within Outlook Data Files (.pst), making email management more intuitive. Additionally, Microsoft has plans to further expand PST file capabilities in future releases.

This update is part of Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 479412 and is expected to roll out gradually over the coming months.

What’s Changing?

The new Outlook for Windows has been evolving rapidly, and this latest update improves how PST files are handled. Users will now be able to group messages stored in PST files as conversations, similar to emails stored in a mailbox. This feature enhances readability and organization, making it easier to find and follow conversations.

Microsoft has also confirmed that future updates will expand PST file capabilities, ensuring better performance and integration within the new Outlook experience.

Rollout Timeline

Microsoft has planned a phased rollout for this update:

  • Targeted Release: Early February 2025 – Mid-March 2025
  • General Availability (Worldwide): Mid-March 2025 – Early April 2025
  • General Availability (GCC): Early April 2025 – Early May 2025

Impact on Organizations

By default, PST file support will be enabled in the new Outlook for Windows. Organizations that want to restrict or block PST file usage can configure the OutlookDataFile mailbox policy.

To disable PST file support, administrators can use the following PowerShell command in Exchange Online PowerShell:

Set-OwaMailboxPolicy -Identity OwaMailboxPolicy-Default -OutlookDataFileAccessLevel None

What You Need to Do

This update will be rolled out automatically, requiring no admin action. However, IT administrators should:

  • Inform users about the change so they can utilize the conversation view feature.
  • Update internal documentation if PST file policies need to be managed.
  • Review mailbox policies to ensure they align with company compliance and security policies.

Before the full rollout, Microsoft will release updated documentation with more details.

Conclusion

The New Outlook for Windows PST File Support update enhances email organization and accessibility, making it easier for users to manage archived emails. Organizations should review their PST file policies to ensure compliance.
